TIPS AND ADVICE

TREES AND PROPERTY DAMAGE
Damage to buildings as a result of tree roots is far less common than many people believe. However, if it does occur the consequences can be serious.

Subsidence is a possibility only if the local soil is shrinkable (some clay soils shrink as they dry out).

Damage to buildings by the physical growth and expansion of roots is rare and only occurs if the tree is very close to the building (within one to two metres).

Damage to lightly loaded structures such as paths, driveways and garden walls is far more common. If a tree is growing close to a fence, for example, it will often push the fence out of alignment. Keep an eye on this as some timely pruning can keep this in check. Providing the tree reduction is not too drastic, if you prune a tree to keep it at a certain size, the roots will generally be kept under control.

If you`re still worried about a tree, give me a call and I`ll take a look at it for you.

TREE ROOTS AND DRAINS
It is practically impossible for tree roots to actually break into drains and associated pipe work. It is much easier for the roots to simply grow around the pipe and carry on growing past it.

However, if an old rusty pipe with poor joints is leaking into the surrounding soil this will attract tree roots like bees to honey, which will then exploit the existing weakness.

Replacement of faulty drains/pipes with modern plastic materials will eliminate the leak and stop problems from happening again.

IS MY TREE PROTECTED?
Your tree can be protected if it is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or is situated within a Conservation Area.

A tree preservation order is an order made by the Council which in general makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, willfully damage or willfully destroy a tree without the planning authority’s permission.

Any tree works can be applied for by completing the relevant application form, specifying the trees, what you want to do and why. These forms can be downloaded here:

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH ALL THE BRANCHES?
Everything we cut from your tree is recycled. All the branches up to 10 inches in diameter are chipped on site and fired straight into the back of our purpose-built truck. These woodchips are used by a power station in Chester as bio fuel.

For bigger logs we can ring these up for you to keep as firewood or we can take it all away.

If access allows, the really big bits of tree trunk can be carved into sculptures.

DO YOU TAKE EVERYTHING AWAY?
Yes. We take it all away and leave your garden super-tidy. If you want to keep the woodchips or logs from your tree just ask and we can do that too.

When you are planning to reduce your tree, for safety or more light etc., consider the
“natural-look”. Avoid pruning back to stubs. These not only look awful but will harm the tree.
The stubs will either die back and introduce decay into the main trunk or will react by
throwing out an explosion of new growth on the end of each and every stub… soon leaving
you with a bigger problem than before it was pruned. If you like the Nick Bailey Tree Surgeon
